Agua by Luciana Abait – a breakthrough new medium presented at LUMINEX: Dialogues of Light
In 2021, artist Luciana Abait stepped into a new realm of creation when she presented Agua at LUMINEX: Dialogues of Light. The photo-based artist has a rich history of working within a 2D medium, crafting beautiful pieces of mixed media art which advocate for the plight of the environment in the face of global warming (take her Iceberg series, for example). However, at LUMINEX: Dialogues of Light she unveiled a breakthrough new medium – video projection art.
.
For Agua Abait collected the visual and audio recordings she had gathered over many years across the globe. When put together, Abait made sure that each shifting color hue within the cascading piece expressed various states of mind and emotion thereby harmonizing the interactive experience physically with an internal one.
.
Inspired by the flood-myth motif that occurs in many cultures, her waterfall acted as the cleansing and rebirth tool, referencing ideas of creation, purification, and sustaining life.
.
For LUMINEX: Dialogues of Light – our outdoor public art exhibition focused on healing communities – Abait’s Agua was the perfect piece to add to the exhibition, and one well worth bringing to the public. It served to foster a poetic awareness of water as a sacred resource for humanity, while creating a moment of reflection for those who attend.
.
Created to sit perfectly within the pre-existing architecture of downtown’s 1025 Flower Street building, Abait’s work was a site-specific, one-of-a-kind piece. Though it was live for one night only, you experience the piece digitally here – PLUS you will get to see an interview with the artist herself.
