The Triforium Project was launched by artists to revive Joseph Young’s groundbreaking polyphonoptic sculpture. Originally commissioned by the City of Los Angeles in 1975, Triforium was designed to respond to live musicians with synchronized light and sound. However, the futuristic artwork remained largely dormant for decades due to technological limitations until now.
With this in mind, and with support from the Goldhirsh Foundation and LA2050, NOW Art led the project’s reactivation. In doing so, the team collaborated with local multimedia artists to bring Young’s vision to life using modern technology. Whereas it once required a two-story computer system and punched paper patterns, it can now be achieved with a laptop and MIDI controllers. As a result, Angelenos can finally experience the artist’s visionary work as originally intended.
